Brunko R. Miljus

Miljus, Brunko R. Sept. 3, 1927 - Missing In Action

Sgt. Miljus became MIA on Feb. 12, 1951. After being captured by the Chinese or North Korean People's Forces, he was held Prisoner of War in the area of Saemal, North Korea. Although reported as having died while a POW, no further information on Sgt. Miljus was available. On May 13, 1992, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea returned boxes of remains purportedly to be American serviceman. Through extensive sampling for DNA, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command has identified Sgt. Miljus. The repatriated remains will be interred at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Willamette National Cemetery. Sgt. Miljus is survived by his brother, George; widow, Leis Virnig; son, Stephen; grandchildren, Stephanie, John and Elana; and seven great-grandchildren.

Sept. 3, 1927-circa December 1951

Portland resident Brunko R. Miljus will be interred with military honors at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 30, at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 S.E. Mount Scott Blvd., Portland.

Brunko was born Sept. 3, 1927, in Portland to George and Dragitza Miljus. He attended Sabin High School before joining the Merchant Marines at age 16. He enlisted in the Army and served in the Philippines during World War II.

On July 16, 1948, he married Leis Butler.

Brunko was serving in the Army in the Korean War as a sergeant when he was reported missing on Feb. 12, 1951. He was captured by either the Chinese or North Korean military and was held as a prisoner of war in the area of Saemal, South Korea. The Army estimates that he died in December 1951.

Brunko was among the remains of soldiers returned to the United States in May 1992 by the North Koreans. The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command positively identified him through DNA tests last year.

Survivors include his widow of Gresham; son, Stephen Miljus of Sandy; brother, George Miljus of Redwood City, Calif.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
